The biggest lessons I've learned about switching careers
And it has NOTHING to do with your CV.
Most people think changing careers starts with updating their CV.
It doesn’t.
You’re starting at step 3 in a 7-step process.
And that’s the biggest mistake I see mid-senior professionals make when they want to change careers.
Since February I’ve had almost 20 one-on-one conversations with people from this newsletter. Different situations on the surface. But the core challenges were almost always the same:
You've outgrown your role and feel ready to move, ideally within the next 90 days
You want to pivot but you're not sure what direction actually makes sense
You know you want a change but you keep second-guessing yourself
You're trying to figure out what kind of role you'd genuinely enjoy
You feel stuck and keep asking: how do I actually do this?
So today I want to share the biggest lessons I’ve learned - and show you what actually moves the needle.
1. The fastest movers invest in strategy first - not last
When people want to change career, most start by rewriting their CV. Then they apply broadly. Then they try to fit into whatever is available. Then they wonder why nothing is sticking.
The people who move fastest don’t start with applications. They start with strategy.
They get clear on what they want, what they bring, and where they fit.
And then everything else becomes easier.
2. Your next move is hidden in your past
I’m a classic example of a talented generalist.
Frontend Developer → IT Auditor & Consultant → Operations Manager → Business Transformation Manager → Business Growth & Partnerships Director → Career Strategist.
That’s been my path.
And at multiple points in that journey, I felt completely unsure of what came next. It didn’t feel linear. It didn’t feel obvious.
But everything started to make sense when I stopped and took a proper audit of my experience.
That’s when I found my golden thread: I was consistently building and leveraging relationships to drive outcomes - no matter the role, no matter the industry.
That insight changed everything.
Because once you see your pattern, you can position it.
Your next move isn’t random. It’s already in your past. You just haven’t connected the dots yet.
3. The market doesn’t reward experience. It rewards clarity
Most people assume that if they have enough experience, the right opportunity will eventually find them.
That’s not how the market works.
The market doesn’t reward everything you’ve done. It rewards how clearly you can communicate what you do, who you are, and where you’re going next.
If your story is scattered, your opportunities will be too.
This is why two people with similar backgrounds can have completely different outcomes. One is clear, targeted, and positioned. The other is broad, unsure, and hoping something sticks.
Clarity is what makes the market take you seriously.
4. A paycut is not a requirement for a pivot. That’s a myth
I’ve never taken a paycut to pivot. Not once.
Positioning makes the difference.
If you can clearly communicate the value you bring and how it translates into a new context, you don’t need to take a paycut.
The market will pay for value. But you have to make that value visible.
5. You don’t need more years or another certification
Unless you’re entering a profession that legally requires it - medicine, law - the issue usually isn’t your qualifications. It’s that you haven’t positioned what you already have.
More qualifications don’t equal more clarity. They just feel safer than making a real move.
6. Clarity is what turns desire into a high-impact pivot
You know you want more. You know you want different.
But without enough clarity to act confidently, you stay in between.
Thinking. Second-guessing. Waiting. Looping.
