It’s been almost 2 weeks since I took a break from Instagram and Twitter to free my mind. I like where my headspace is, and I’m not sure when I’m coming back. Could be sooner, could be later, whichever it is, I’m pacing myself.
Towards the end of August, I started feeling very overwhelmed. I couldn’t place my hands on what exactly was causing it, but most times that happens to me, it’s an indication that I need a break from mindless scrolling, content over-consumption, and unnecessary lowkey pressure.
I know I’m not alone. Sometimes we can get trapped in our heads and our own minds can decide to work against us, making us feel depressed and low-spirited. I also won’t be too far off if I said social media was a big contributor to this feeling. Showing up online to stay relevant is one thing and feeling drained from the digital rat race is another. And it’s important to know the difference.
Feeling overwhelmed? I’ve compiled some tips and ideas to help you get out of your head and free your mind:
Take a screen (read social media) break. Even Kendrick Lamar takes a break.
Journal
Declutter (I have 2 big bags of old clothes from decluttering in August alone, and my wardrobe looks a lot nicer)
Try something new and enjoyable
Exercise
Dance
Create for yourself (not just for algorithms sake)
Go out and explore
Shop(or not if you don’t have cash to splurge)Celebrate yourself (check out tips from #Note 06)
Spend time alone to reflect
Spend time with family and/or friends
Forgive
Learn something new
Practice gratitude
“If I feel I have to remove myself, I just remove myself. I won’t complain about it. I won’t cause a big blow-up or a big stir and let the world know that the walls are closing in. Being able to be aware [of myself emotionally] and be able to eventually grow— emotionally mature to that level, it may take more time than the next man,” he continued. “That’s why I never point fingers when artists are not capable of upholding themselves in that type of stressful position because some people grow different and it takes time especially…when who they are and who they want to be sometimes gets distorted. For me, it’s all about being aware of how I’m feeling. If it is too much, let me remove myself for a couple of years.”
